5. Transportation

Airport

The largest airport of Colombia “El Dorado” is located in the city of Bogotá, at about 14 kilometres from the city centre. There are many airline companies operating at El Dorado, providing flights to tourists from around the world. It is the principal hub to Avianca, the national flag carrier of Colombia, with more than 100 destinations.

El Dorado is served by Transmilenio, buses, taxis and particular transportation companies. We recommend taxi; from the airport to the University the fare should be around USD $10 (depending on traffic). During peak traffic times you can expect the trip to take 45 minutes to an hour.

Transportation

Bogotá’s public transportation system includes Transmilenio, buses and taxis. You can also use private transportation options such as Uber, although it is not formally recognized in Bogotá.

Taxis in Colombia are relatively cheap in comparison to similarly populated cities. It is the easiest way to move around the city. Fares range from COP $5.000 (USD $1,8) and will grow depending on distance and time; a regular trip will probably cost about USD $5. Taxi drivers usually don’t speak English. Taxis can be hailed by smartphone apps (Tappsi. easy taxi). Taxis in Bogotá do not issue receipts and only take cash, so any taxis hailed with Tappsi or easy taxi will leave you without a receipt. If you need a receipt, consider using Uber.

Transmilenio is the main transportation system of the city. It is usually crowded, especially in peak hours; but it is the fastest option for very long trips. Transmilenio works with a rechargeable card you will have purchase by COP $3.000 (about USD $1,1 one-time-only payment for the plastic) and each trip costs COP $2.300 (about USD $0,8) (smartphone app: IOS, Google Play).

6. Visa

Please refer to the Colombian consulate or embassy in your country in order to verify if you need a Visa. On this page you will be able to see if you require a visa to enter Colombia. Please note that this webpage is only in Spanish.

7. Weather

In Bogotá, during November, the average daily temperatures are around 47°F, rarely falling below 41°F or exceeding 52°F.

The temperature varies so little throughout the year that it is not entirely meaningful to discuss hot and cold seasons. The climate in Bogotá is cool and overcast. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 44°F to 66°F and is rarely below 37°F or above 70°F.
