Data management plays a central role in leading modern business schools forward. It supports external compliance, accreditation, rankings, stakeholder accountability, strategising, risk management, internal management-by-objectives, portfolio performance measurement, assurance of learning, publishing and granting quality assurance more generally – a list that can easily be further extended. As a consequence, business schools have to collect, process, analyse and maintain more data than ever before. This trend of institutional management becoming more data-driven is likely to continue in the foreseeable future. As data management assumes a more strategic role in business school development, it also requires systematic senior management attention.
This how-to workshop will provide you with the tools to understand the power of data for creating strategies and finding ways to source, build, embed and recycle data in a smart and simple way for multiple purposes.
You will develop an in-depth understanding of Smart Data Management in business schools and higher education contexts, and you will be able to evaluate the positioning of your institution in the light of the basic principles and best practices of SDM.
The data mapping exercise will provide you with practical experience, allow you to take stock of your institution’s use of data, and help you better understand the interconnectedness of various factors at play. The exercise will require approx. a half-day of work outside of the workshop sessions.
DURING THE WORKSHOP, YOU WILL LEARN
- what the smart data essentials are in the context of a business school’s ecosystem;
- how you can develop a strategic approach to data analysis;
- how to go from extracting information and data to gaining valuable insights;
- how to recycle data in a smart way to reuse for smart data classification and efficient quality processes;
- how to communicate the data as a source for solving problems and identifying opportunities;
- how to use your skills and knowledge to influence and embed data management into the heart of your school’s decision-making process.
This workshop will be especially relevant to quality assurance professionals, professional and academic staff responsible for rankings and data management and anybody wishing to understand the power of data in business schools and higher education contexts.

Session no. 2: The “why” of data: How to go from a compliance mindset to a strategic mindset?
This session will explain why data is not here just for reporting and compliance purposes but should be part of a strategic mindset at the institutional level to drive decision-making. During this session, you will learn how to figure out the “why” of data in your institution along with the “what” and the “how”. Typically, most people know what they do, and most know how to do it, but very few know why they do it.
