In such cases, substitutes are welcome at no extra cost as long as EFMD Global receives the notification of the substitution.

Airport

Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) is the primary international airport serving São Paulo. It can take 30-45 minutes to get from GRU to downtown São Paulo, or longer during peak times.

Transportation

At the airport, you may be approached by individuals offering cab services; we recommend travelling by official taxi.

Brazilian currency is the REAL. The exchange rate is approximately R$ 5.00 per USD. Exchange facilities are available at airports if needed. You can view the current exchange rate here.

Below you will some basic information and precautions that should be observed in any city that welcomes tourists from everywhere in the world, as is the case of the welcoming city of São Paulo:

• Language – Portuguese is the spoken language in Brazil. English is the official language of the Americas Annual Conference.
• Documents – Do not carry your original documents on you. Always carry a copy of your passport. We encourage you to make a copy before your trip and lock your originals in the hotel safe.
• Electrical Appliances – Electric Voltage is 110 volts (60 cycles). If necessary, you can request an international adapter at the hotel reception.
• Tipping – Nearly all hotels add a service charge to the bill, usually 10%. Most restaurants also add 10% to the check total, but they must make it clear that they have done so. Brazilians do not normally tip taxi drivers, but they normally round the total up.
• Area Code – The telephone country code for Brazil is 55, and the metropolitan area code for São Paulo is 11.
• Health and Insurance – Brazil has a large network of private hospitals in major metropolitan centers. Private medical care is usually quite expensive, and it is advisable that visitors have medical insurance. There is an ambulance available during the conference, and if necessary, please talk to the FDC staff and/or hotel reception.
• Parking – There is a parking lot at the FDC building for those arriving to the conference by car.

Sites and Tourism

• Parque Ibirapuera
  • One of the largest parks in the whole of Latin America, Ibirapuera Park is one of the few nature retreats available in the congested city of São Paulo. In addition to cycle paths, picturesque lakes and plenty of flora, it’s also home to several museums and cultural spaces, as well as playing host to art exhibitions, fashion events and all-night parties.

• Mercado Municipal
  • Set inside a multi-story warehouse in São Paulo’s downtown area, a trip to this food heaven is a must. Get lost among the hundreds of colorful and lively stalls selling exotic fruits and vegetables, cheeses, seafood, poultry, drinks, bakery products and spices, where the vendors enthusiastically encourage you to sample the goods. Be prepared to loosen your belt by a few notches to eat the market’s most famous sandwich: a small baguette packed with a brick-sized wedge of mortadella.

• Avenida Paulista
  • The city’s dynamic main street is lined with towering office blocks and home to intriguing galleries and bars. São Paulo’s main boulevard has a split personality: by day, it’s a flurry of white-collar workers moving between business meetings; by night, it takes on a weekend vibe as relieved executives enjoy the happy hours at the bars and street performers perform various songs and acts. Between 7am and 4pm on Sundays, the street becomes pedestrian-only and a popular place to chill out for residents and visitors alike.

• Pinacoteca
  • Inaugurated in 1905, the Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo is the oldest art museum in the city and state. The collection today has around 9,000 works from artists like Anita Malfatti, Bourdelle and Rodin. The first floor of the building is reserved for temporary exhibitions while the second floor holds the museum’s permanent collection. The Pinacoteca has two buildings nearby to each other. The first is the main museum building itself with works by famous artists and temporary exhibitions. The second is in the building that was once the São Paulo state’s infamous Department for Political and Social Order. A place where interrogations and reported tortures of ‘enemies of the state’ were conducted during the country’s military dictatorship. The building now houses a memorial to the resistance movement and the political repression of that time.

• Sala São Paulo
  • One of the world’s most important concert halls known for its incredible acoustics and magnificent interior, the Sala São Paulo, home of the São Paulo’s state symphony orchestra, is a breathtaking piece of architecture, yet what is truly outstanding is the quality of the sounds. A huge, adjustable ceiling helps optimize the orchestra’s acoustics depending on what genre they are playing, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the powerful ebbs and flows of the various instruments playing.
