Student wellbeing and engagement have become prominent topics in recent years. These conversations are driven by the pandemic and subsequent societal tensions affecting student communities worldwide. HE institutions are increasingly held accountable for their duty of care to enrolled students at all levels. Whilst students are ultimately the main agents in their wellbeing, HE institutions should provide development opportunities and scenarios to equip graduates with adaptability and resilience for the world of work.
Alongside fostering resilience and a growth mindset, employers are looking for students who can apply their knowledge to real-world situations and demonstrate critical engagement. An underlying theme of this workshop is that students who can nurture their wellbeing and engage in meaningful educational experiences will be better equipped for the next step in their careers.
We consider approaches to student engagement that focus on fostering an environment that supports diverse student groups. What adds value beyond a programme’s academic offerings, and how can students be encouraged to own this? Additionally, we will examine how student support services can be optimally organised and how geographical and institutional culture might impact this.
Our interactive networking workshop explores innovative approaches to wellbeing and engagement and the intersection between these student experience components. We will identify common challenges participants and their institutions face, co-create potential solutions, and consider how to enrich and organise robust student support services that empower our learners.
This training is aimed at Programme Directors, Managers, Learning Centres, or any other faculty or professional services staff who are interested in increasing student wellbeing, engagement, and identification.
The workshop, run over two days, will:
In the spirit of EFMD, you can expect to work with peers from different institutions and countries to gain insights from across the sector. You will learn what others are doing and consider how you may adapt ideas for your institution and the student experience you provide. You will be given time, tools and resources to organise your thoughts and learning around this and prompted to set goals and plan for action.
We will admit a maximum of 25 participants to this workshop to enable an interactive experience for you. Registration will close as soon as this number has been reached.

The format of the two days will be introduced along with the speakers. During this session, we will also set our hopes and expectations for the workshop. As a group, we will collaborate on any intended outcomes beyond those already identified for the workshop.
10:00 – 12:00
Session 1: Growing a culture of wellbeing
This session will examine how institutions and programmes can foster an environment that promotes wellbeing and provides students a space to reach their potential. We will consider the importance of encouraging students to engage in healthy critical thinking and creativity, skills that they will need in their future work. We will consider different methodologies for building resilience and a growth mindset in our learners.

Lunch
13:00 – 15:00
Session 2: Organising student support
Institutions offer a variety of services to their students: wellbeing, careers, study skills, alumni engagement and beyond. In this session, we examine how these services sit within our institutional infrastructures, how technology and modernisation work (or don’t) within this context, the governance of services and the people shaping the provisions. Thinking about what happens behind the scenes, we will explore how we connect the pieces of the ‘support services’ jigsaw, deliver information to learners, and how we might work collaboratively across siloes for maximum impact.
15:00 – 15:20
Coffee break
15:20 – 16:40
Session 3: Equipping students to flourish
Drawing together the themes from day one, we will return to the front end of services and question how students interact with us. How much support do we give students, and how do we empower them to take ownership of their learning journeys? Are we doing too much or too little? We will dissect the challenges and opportunities of providing education for Gen Z students as digital natives.
16:40 – 18:30
Cocktail and fingerfood
09:30 – 10:30
Welcome and introduction of the day
10:00 – 12:00
Session 4: Considering approaches to engagement: Understanding our students
Ultimately, we strive for our support services to promote engagement and cultivate a positive student experience. The services we offer and the way that they are organised are there to provide a safe foundation from which students can work. This session will delve into what engagement means to the workshop participants, how it is measured and managed, and how we might better understand and work to improve this.
12:15 – 13:30
Lunch
13:30 – 15:00
Session 5: Encouraging progress and anticipating friction
We will conclude the workshop by exploring various student journeys, considering how we account for the diverse needs of learners. We’ll discuss customising and tailoring our offerings to support students through successes and difficulties. This session will also connect back to earlier discussions and activities, highlighting the intersections between them.
15:00 – 15:30
Session 6: Intentions, actions and close
As we close the workshop, we will reflect on whether we met our goals and identify the work left to do. We will set intentions and forward actions based on the workshops and conversations.
